Jak’s Den in Livingston offers emotional, social and practical support to children and young people age 0-25 from all over Scotland who have been diagnosed with cancer, a related illness and their families and friends or who have sadly been bereaved.
Our children and young people and their families and friends can come to the Den during opening hours or by appointment at other times.
We have drop-in sessions, music therapy, counselling, pamper days, alternative therapies, activity days including cake decorating, puppet making, magic shows, teen days- X-Box and PS4 challenges, arts and crafts, coffee mornings and much more.
Team Jak was then formed to help make Jak’s Den a reality and it will include the following as imagined by Jak himself:
Sadly some of our work involves supporting bereaved parents, siblings, grandparents and friends.
We offer bereavement support through counselling, support groups and memory making days and activities.
We are honoured to provide a voucher for bereaved families to get a cushion or bear made from an item of clothing by Tip2Toe in Fabric, and we have a beautiful wish tree in our Lilac Space that families can make a star and place it on to remember their angel.
We also support children who are struggling with a close bereavement normally through cancer or a related illness.
We have also established strong links with CHAS who can provide further support if required.
We are very excited about our plans for a satellite Jak’s Den to be opened in Aberdeen as soon as we can raise enough money and find suitable premises which will support our children young people and families in Aberdeen and the surrounding areas through drop in counselling and various support groups and music and alternative therapies. We will need to raise about £70,000 in order to fully furnish and kit out this Jak’s Den for a year.
We also have plans to open in Glenrothes in the next couple of years in conjunction with the Warout Stadium initiative and rebuild.
Meantime we will continue to support our families throughout Scotland by providing Music Therapy and Counselling in Aberdeen and Dundee wards as requested, and through Jak’s Sacks, fairy boxes and snacks in Edinburgh and Glasgow and Jaks Sacks and fairy boxes as requested in other wards.
We also plan to provide online support within the next 18 months to families unable to travel to any Jak’s Den facilities to ensure we are supporting every child and young person with cancer in Scotland regardless of geographical position.
Team Jak also provide outreach services for those unable to get to the Den and those still in hospital.
We provide snacks, drinks, vouchers, games, dvds, Jak’s Sacks, Sibling Sacks and anything else requested by the Ward Sister to the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital as and when required.
We also arrange special moments from both within and outwith the Den for any child and family who need a wee “boost”.
